This clinic is for swimmers with basic ability and are able to swim a minimum of 50 yards.  All four competitive strokes are evaluated and corrected with the use of drills and corrective feedback to further develop existing skills.  The goal of the clinic is to help swimmers improve stroke technique and teach drills that will enable the continued refinement of the stroke.  Swimmers are not required to swim all strokes and may work on only those strokes they choose.  Swimmers must wear a cap and goggles.  During the clinic, hand paddles and fins may be used.  Participant may use ours or bring their own.

Welcome to YMCA Swim Lessons.
We are excited to work with you!

YMCA Swim Lessons
At the Y, swimming is a life skill.  Our swim lessons prepare students to stay safe and enjoy the water.  We focus on building strong, competent, and confident swimmers.  In addition to the skills we identified based on your goals, we will be working on the water competency skills listed below.  We look forward to working with you to help you progress and meet your goals.  Please feel free to ask your instructor questions about the skill you are working on and your progress.

PROGRAM SKILLS:
Foundation Skills We Will Work On
The YMCA Swim Lessons program focuses on teaching these foundational swimming skills for water competency:

  • Submerge – helps students feel comfortable in the water and build a foundation for future skills.
  • Swim, Float, Swim – helps students reach the side of the pool if they are not within reach by swimming on their front, rolling to their back to breathe when they get tired, grabbing the wall, and climbing out.
  • Jump, Push, Turn, Grab – helps students safely exit the pool by pushing off the bottom, grabbing the wall, and climbing out.

Additional Skills We Will Work On:
In addition to foundational skills, your lessons will address skills needed to help meet your specific goals and needs.  This could include stroke development, deep water compentency, building endurance, or breathing techniques.

PERSONAL SWIMMING HISTORY:
You Are Not Alone
Whether you are new to swim lessons or do not have very much experience, remember that you are not alone.

According to research, more than half of all Americans either cannot swim or do not have all the basic water safety skills needed to swim safely.  Additionally, 20-25 percent of people are afraid of water.  Learning how to conquer your fear could save your life – or someone else’s.  Conqering your fear and anxiety is your first step toward learning to swim

At the Y, we are committed to help you reach your goals in swimming!
