All lifeguarding courses follow the requirements of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program. 

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class (Course is Blended Learning)

Registration for a class offering must be completed with the Membership Services Desk.

Minimum age 15 on or before the final scheduled class. Successful completion of the Lifeguard Pre-Course Test and 6 hours of Blended Learning prior to first day of class. Participants should bring a whistle/lanyard, adult and infant resuscitation mask, a hip pack and pen/pencil. Attendance at all scheduled classes is required. Blended learning format all lessons completed prior to first day of the course. Refunds will not be given for no shows or cancellations less than 48 hours in advance without a doctor’s note.

Lifeguard Certification Mandatory (Precourse) Swimming Skills Evaluation

LIFEGUARD PREREQUISITE SWIMMING SKILLS EVALUATION– Minimum age 15, must successfully complete before enrolling in a Lifeguard class.

Successful completion of the following skills is required in the Prerequisite Swimming Skills Evaluation

  1. Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence: Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150yards.  After swimming 150 yds, maintain position at the surface of the water Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only.  After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, swim 50 more yards.
  2. Timed Event—Starting in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to surface and swim 20 yards on your back with legs only and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, in 1 minute 40 seconds (goggles are not permitted).

PRIVATE LIFEGUARD PRECOURSE ASSESSMENT

An individual/private Lifeguard Prerequisite Swimming Skills Evaluation is offered for the participant who is unable to attend the group assessment offerings.  Lifeguard pre-course mandatory prerequisite swimming skills assessment are valid for 3 months.  Participants must be 15 years of age or older.

Lifeguard Workshop - Pre-course Swimming Skills Assessment Practice

LIFEGUARD PRE-COURSE TEST WORKSHOP

Participants will practice skills necessary to pass the American Red Cross Lifeguard Pre-course Prerequisite Swimming Skills Assessment.  Open to members and non-members 14 years and older who want to prepare and practice the skills needed for the Lifeguard Pre-course, or who just want to build endurance and technique.

Please Note: Participants may need multiple workshops to prepare for the Lifeguard Pre-course prerequisite swimming skills assessment.  Enrolling in and participating in any of these workshops does not count as passing the ARC Lifeguard Pre-Course prerequisite swimming skills assessment, which will be a separate class registration.

Workshops will focus on:

    1. Stroke Development: Front crawl and breaststroke.
    2. Skills Development: Feet first surface dives; retrieving and towing a 10-lb object.
    3. Treading: Different techniques to improve treading water without arms by using different leg movements.
    4. Build Endurance and Stamina

Shallow Water Lifeguard 5 ft Certification Class

Must successfully complete the Lifeguard Certification Pre-Course Test.

This class will certify the successful participant as a Shallow Water Lifeguard and will be able to work at facilities where the water depth is a maximum of 5 feet deep.  Participation at all classes is mandatory.  Failure to show will result in the loss of the class fees, no refunds less than 48 hours prior to class start without a Dr’s not.  Class change fees are $50.  Each participant will be sent a link from the American Red Cross, approximately 10 days prior to the first class.  This is a blended learning class, 6 hours of pre-course work must be completed by the first day of the in-person session.  Approximately 10 days prior to the first class, the link will arrive from the American Red Cross to the participants email address.  Certification is not guaranteed, each participant must meet the objectives of all class skills, pass a written test with 80% or higher, and complete 3 final skills assessments.  Participant supplies needed for the class (not provided by the Y) are whistel/lanyard, lifeguard hip pack and resuscitation masks for an adult and infant.

Swim Officials Level 1 Training

This course is designed to train participants as swim officials for YMCA Competitive Swimming in the areas of Stroke and Turn Judge, Relay Take-off Judge, Place Judge and Timer. The course focuses on the specific duties and responsibilities of the above officials prior to, during and after a swim meet. The course also reviews the facilities requirements for a meet, swimmer eligibility, and the roles of Chief Judge, Starter and Referee. Successful completion of a written examination is required to pass the course.

MUST be affiliated with a YMCA or USA Swim Team in order to take this course.

Swim Officials Level II Training

YMCA Swim Officials 2 Certification:

This course is designed to certify or recertify participants to be Swim Officials for YMCA Competitive Swimming in the areas of Referee, Starter and Chief Judge. The course focuses on the specific duties and responsibilities of the above officials prior to, during and after a swim meet. The course also reviews the facilities and staffing requirements for a meet, rules for swimming various strokes, matters relating to eligibility and other key roles of the official. Successful completion of a written examination is required to pass the course.

Course participants desiring initial certification must have been a fully certified YMCA Level I or USA-S official for at least one year.  In addition, they must provide a copy of their YMCA Level I Certification or USA-S Official designation and documentation that they have served a minimum of 8 sessions as a fully certified YMCA and/or USA-S Swim Official.

Course participants intending to use this program to recertify as YMCA Level II officials must provide documentation that they have served a minimum of 12 sessions over the prior three-year certification period.

MUST be affiliated with a YMCA or USA Swim Team in order to take the course.
